Brian Rush and I are working on a set of prints together. We are creating 6 prints each. They are multi layered reduction prints with some silkscreening. I'll post more samples as they get closer to completion. The finnished set will be 12 prints, 20 sets in the edition.

Robert Vandercook reduction lino cut. This is a collaborative effort that Kunche and I are working on down at UNO for the Vandercook Centenary Print Bundle, a limited edition exchange of letterpress prints celebrating the first one hundred years of Vandercook proof presses (1909-2009). The goal is to exchange one hundred prints between one hundred Vandercook operators.

tried camping at jalama beach but it was way too windy. taught a week-long letterpress class with a group of 9 students from flintridge prep. there are photos on facebook under my name. started riding my bike this week, trying to get exercise and save gas at the same time. art center starts this week too, I have my two day workshop at archetype press. the workshop is going to be shorter than it has been in the past so we will focus on type and less on illustration. celebrated mothers day with pancakes and friends. zachary rossman had a nice piece in the new york times today. i had a spot as well in the op-ed letters section.obama vs. clinton

back in school matt groller and i got together to play surf music. we added skot gillis and formed POSER. a band that was short lived but we had great fun and now some of our efforts are on myspace. i've also teamed up with kelly grace and we have placed items on etsy.com under the name "eikomoon". we made dolls and we're working on other things that she likes to sew and i've put various prints and art work up too. eikomoon

NEW YEAR

spent the holidays in Iowa, came home to a mess from the rain. the fam had to move into a temporary apartment because our roof was in the worst shape possible and our property management company bring a whole new level to turd polishing. I had to call the city code enforcement just to get them to get moving after gallons of water remained trapped in parts of our sagging ceiling. I lost an epson 1280, scanner, artwork and the drawings for the work I was doing at the time. we just moved back in after 6 weeks of being out of the house and i'm quickly getting back on line here and back to normal. all of my saturday high classes are running at art center this term, juju is rgowing fast, walking and talking. there's talk of a move in the not too distant future, we'll see how things progress over the next few months. meanwhile please visit briar press

here is a piece that i did for the new york times.new york times this was a small spot illustration that was very fun to do because i was able to show my students at Children's Community SchoolCCS just exactly how an illustration works, where they come from, and who does them. i may have inspired a future illustrator.
in other news, UNO picked up a print shop in oakland over thanksgiving, we all unloaded it last sunday and there was a ton of stuff. 40 drawers of type which looked to be in pretty good shape, a small galley tray holder. i'll post some pictures soon.

group show in november, i'm going to do all silkscreens - no painting this time. i want to be excited about the work i'm doing, and i think that these new pieces reflect that. all of these pieces are about creation and mythology - where we come from in the perspective of multiple cultures. see you there.

found these pictures i took of gary kelley when he came to art center. the poster advertising his talk mentioned a gouache demo, i couldn't believe it, and it was some kind of misunderstanding. the funny thing is he uses pastel, and then this lady got up and left when he announced the mistake.

a while back i made three books of cmyk prints. i really liked the idea and now i'm making a new series with fresh imagery. the inspiration is a combination of things brought together in a comic syle. i love the way old comics look and the seperation of layers. this piece is done by hand, scanned, and then seperated out and printed with screenprinting. this is my favorite image so far, i'll post the end result later this week.

A while back I helped Jason Holley get ready for his solo show up in Berkeley. Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra recently had a show with Josh Cochran and Mark Allen Miller. They both had some work made into these really great quality tote bags. I bought one for Chelsea.

What a year, The great news is that Chelsea delivered Judah on December 28th.Thanks to everyone who has come over to visit and helped out in their own way. A site will soon be in place where you can see how things are going in his life, until then I'll post some content from time to time.

Workshop

Rob Clayton's portfolio class is doing a month long workshop at the press, I have the honor of running the class and it's turning out to be alot of fun. The Illustration students always find new and imaginative ways to use type and image together. Next term I am going to be teaching a workshop on image making at Archetype, this should be fun and hopefully yield a lot of great work. I've also finnished a 15 page image book that is being bound as I write this. The imagry is all 4 color seperation prints of my work, a new direction that I hope finds light at the top.Check out the Clayton Brothers website, I have a link in my links section.
